Efforts on Environmental Care

Based on the Group Environmental Policy, the Concordia Financial Group recognizes that preserving and protecting the global environment isone of its important responsibilities, and is actively addressing environmental issues through its core business activities and its own corporateactivities and promoting activities to preserve local environments and ecosystems. The Group Sustainability Committee, chaired by the president, deliberates on the state of these initiatives and the Board of Directors supervises.

Environmental considerations through our core financial services

(Hamagin) Decarbonization Private Placement Bonds - Protecting Forests and Water Sources(The Bank of Yokohama)

The Bank of Yokohama invites local companies to support its efforts to achieve SDGs and realize a decarbonized society. In commemoration of the issuance of private placement bonds by customers, Bank of Yokohama donates 0.1% of the issuance amount to Kanagawa Prefecture’s “Designated Donations for Water Source and Forest Maintenance Expenses“*1. Through these donations, the Bank of Yokohama promotes local water source and forest maintenance efforts.

    Donations are an important source of funding for undertaking water source forestation projects that enhance the public benefit of forests, such as water source protection and soil runoff prevention.

Green Foreign Currency Deposits with Donation(The Bank of Yokohama)

The Bank of Yokohama donates 0.3% (equivalent to the interest rate) of the amount of new customer deposits in Green Foreign Currency Time Deposits*2 to Kanagawa Prefecture’s “Designated Donations for Water Source Forest Maintenance Expenses”*3. Through this initiative, we contribute to solving social issues through loans to the Environmental Field using Green Foreign Currency Time Deposits as the source of funds, and promote local water source and forest maintenance efforts through donations.

    Customer funds placed in foreign currency time deposits are used as a source of funds for loans to the Environmental Field that meet Bank of Yokohama’s eligibility criteria (criteria for loans to be covered by Green Deposits).

    We donate 0.3% (equivalent to the interest rate) of new deposits during the campaign period to the Designated Donations for Water Source Forest Maintenance Expenses. For this initiative, the campaign period is from April 2023 to July 2023.

Switching to a Web account (no-passbook account)(The Bank of Yokohama)

The Bank of Yokohama made a donation to the Kanagawa Prefecture Water Source Environmental Conservation and Restoration Fund*4, which was established by Kanagawa Prefecture, for each account that the customer switched from a passbook to a Web account*5 (campaign period: November 2022–March 2023). The goals of this initiative were to reduce resource consumption and CO2 emissions from the production of passbooks and to contribute to environmental conservation by donating ¥39*6 to this fund for each customer who switched from a passbook to a web account (no-passbook account). As a result of this initiative, many customers agreed to the switch, and we donated approximately ¥1.07 million to the fund. Through this fund, this donation will be used to pass on the rich blessings of forests to the next generation and to ensure the stable availability of quality water into the future. Customers switching to Web accounts (no-passbook accounts) reduced our CO2 emissions about 1.5 tons, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 that 110 cedar trees can absorb each year.

    This service eliminates the need to issue paper passbooks and makes it possible for customers to check their balance and deposit/withdrawal details using an application or via Internet banking. This environmentally friendly service reduces CO2 emissions generated during the production of passbooks.

    The purpose of this fund is to promote forest maintenance efforts by Kanagawa Prefecture and its efforts to solve problems related to water pollution caused by domestic wastewater etc. in order to preserve the the prefecture’s water source environment.

    We donated ¥39 per passbook as as a token of our appreciation for our customers’ switching. (In Japanese, the word for “39” sounds like “Thank You”.)

Environmental consideration through corporate activities

Activities as reforestation partner(Hamagin Forest)

The Bank of Yokohama supports the Kanagawa Reforestation 50 Year Plan, a plan to pass on the rich bounty of Kanagawa Prefecture’s forests to the next generation, and serves as a “reforestation partner”, meaning a company or organization committed to reforestation. We named the forest on the banks of Lake Tanzawa “Hamagin no Mori” and are striving to conserve the rich forest and water source environment.

Endorsement of the Kanagawa Zero Plastic Trash Declaration (The Bank of Yokohama)

The Bank of Yokohama supports the Kanagawa Zero Plastic Litter Declaration that Kanagawa Prefecture, an SDGs future city, has established to eliminate plastic waste and supports efforts to tackle microplastic issues. To commemorate the expansion of the use of the SDGs Friends Loan supporting SDGs management initiatives by local companies, we donated 5 million yen to the Kanagawa Coastal Beautification Foundation Public Interest Foundation Corporation. The donation is used for coastal cleanup and coastal beautification awareness in an effort to solve the microplastic problem.

Marine conservation efforts through the company cafeteria

The Bank of Yokohama is the first bank in Japan to offer a menu of Sustainable Seafood* in its headquarters employee cafeteria. Incorporating sustainable marine products into thecompany cafeteria menu encourages each employee to change his or her food awareness and behavior.

    "Sustainable seafood" refers to seafood caught in MSC-certified fisheries that are properly managed in consideration of marine resources and the environment, and seafood raised in ASC-certified aquaculture farms that have minimal environmental and social impact.

Response and Support for Public Policies and Regulations

The Group actively supports public policies related to climate change and energy consumption reduction. We are committed to reducing energy usage and GHG emissions. Additionally, we respond in accordance with laws related to climate change and energy consumption reduction, such as the "Act on Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures" and the "Act on Rationalizing Energy use and Shifting to Non-fossil Energy”.
The Yokohama Bank of the Group is a specified business operator under the “Act on Rationalizing Energy use and Shifting to Non-fossil Energy”, and is obligated to make efforts to reduce its annual energy consumption intensity by 1% or more on average. We are actively working towards to reduce our energy consumption intensity by implementing various energy-saving measures.

We take part in tree and flower planting activities at tree-planting ceremonies held in Minatomirai District, Sakuragi-Cho station square, and Shonan International Village Megurino Mori.
